How to Tell If Your USDT Is ERC20 or TRC20

One of the most common questions from new crypto users is: how do I know which network my USDT is on? Here are the definitive methods to identify whether you are holding ERC20 or TRC20 USDT.

Method 1 — Check the Wallet Address Prefix

This is the fastest method. Every blockchain address has a distinctive format. Ethereum addresses (used for ERC20 tokens) always start with 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters — for example, 0xAbCd1234.... TRON addresses (used for TRC20 tokens) always start with the capital letter T followed by 33 alphanumeric characters — for example, TQn9Y2.... If your receiving address starts with 0x, send ERC20. If it starts with T, send TRC20.

Method 2 — Check Your Wallet or Exchange

Most wallets and exchanges display the network alongside the token. In Trust Wallet, your USDT balance will show either "Ethereum" or "TRON" as the network label. On Binance or OKX, the deposit/withdrawal screen always shows a network selector — look for "ERC20 (ETH)" or "TRC20 (TRX)" explicitly. Never assume the default — always check the label.

Method 3 — Check the Transaction on a Blockchain Explorer

If you have a transaction hash, you can verify it on the corresponding explorer. Ethereum transactions can be verified on Etherscan.io. TRON transactions can be verified on Tronscan.org. Paste the transaction hash into the correct explorer to see the token, amount, sender, and receiver.

What Happens If You Send to the Wrong Network?

Funds sent to a cross-network address are typically lost permanently. Neither the sender nor the recipient can access them, because the private keys for Ethereum wallets do not control TRON addresses, even if the address strings look similar. Always verify twice before sending any amount.

The single most important rule: 0x = Ethereum ERC20, T = TRON TRC20. Match the prefix before every transfer. erc20otrc20.org
